Object of the game
As the Quizmaster, your objective is to ask questions that you think the Trivia Team won’t be able to answer. Consider their strengths, weaknesses, and overall stupidity before selecting which question to ask.
As the Trivia Team, your objective is to know stuff. Work together to correctly answer the questions that the quiz master asks. Also, gloat. Gloat a lot.
Initial setup
Select a Quizmaster from the group. This could be the eldest, the smartest, the most arrogant – any criteria that the Team agrees on. If the team can’t agree on an option, pick the player with the most beer in their glass.
Select a Team Captain from the remaining players. Same selection criteria apply. The Team captain gets the final say on the answer the team are giving, as well as deciding when to use the Strategy Moves (see below)
Set the cards in front of the Quizmaster in 3 separate piles. Put the pawns on the starting spot on the board and you’re ready to go. Game setup is easier than the questions. Mostly.
How to play
The Quizmaster selects a card from one of the piles in front of them, choosing whichever category they think the team will know the least about. The card will contain three questions. The first is the 1-point question, the second is the 2-point question and the third (you guessed it!) is the 3-point question.
The Quizmaster then selects which question to ask based on the points system. If the Team get it right, they move their pawn that number of points. If the Team get it wrong, then the Quizmaster gets to move their pawn. The questions are arranged in order of difficulty, and the points are awarded accordingly:
Question | Team Points (If correct) | Quizmaster Points (If wrong) |
1st Question (easy) | 1 | 3 |
2nd Question (medium) | 2 | 2 |
3rd Question (hard) | 3 | 1 |
e.g. If the Quizmaster thinks the Team could answer all three questions correctly, they would ask the easiest so that the Team only move forward 1 space. However, if the Quizmaster thinks the Team would get the first two correct, they’d ask the hard one so that they move forward a space.
The game then continues in this manner until a winner is crowned.
Strategy moves
The Trivia team have a number of strategy moves they can make throughout the game. Each one of these can be used once per game:
Multi Choice
Force the Quizmaster to make the question they just asked a multiple-choice question. They then have to make up three alternative wrong answers, as well as providing the correct answer. Watch them stumble through making stuff up, and hopefully the answer becomes obvious.
Card Choice
The Trivia Team can force the Quizmaster to pick up a particular card from their 3 piles. Particularly good if the Team see a category that they think they know a lot about.
Question Choice
The Trivia Team can choose which question is asked on a card the Quizmaster just picked up. They may force the Quizmaster to ask the easy question
How to WIN!
Get to the end of the board first. Duh!
Next game?
Once the losers have finished crying, play again! The Team Captain then becomes the new Quizmaster, the Quizmaster joins the Trivia Team and a new Captain is selected. Repeat until everyone has had a turn at being Quizmaster.
Advanced rules/additional rules
There are many different ways the game can be played, if the standard rules are too BORING.
Multiple Trivia Teams
For large groups, they can be separated into separate Trivia teams to face off. The Quizmaster can then sit out of the game or be a third player. Alternatively, the Teams could ask each other the questions using the same points system as above.
Play Online
The game can be played over a video call, for teams that are geographically separated. The Quizmaster will always need to be the player with the physical game, but the rest of the participants can play as the Trivia Team.
